How to travel light but look sharp

How to travel light but look sharp

The days of checking in a huge suitcase for every trip are fading fast as airlines continue to tighten baggage allowances. At the same time, most people still want to look put-together when they arrive.

If you're heading away for work or a weekend in Europe with a carry-on bag, a few smart choices can help you save space and feel confident throughout your trip. Before travelling, you should also check your airline's baggage allowance and the Civil Aviation Authority's guidance on carry-on luggage so you can avoid unexpected fees and pack more efficiently.

Choose versatile clothing

Rather than planning separate outfits for every day, choose clothing that you can wear in different combinations. Neutral colours such as navy, grey, beige and white pair easily together, which means fewer items can create more looks.

A navy overshirt, for example, can work over a T-shirt during the day and with a collared shirt in the evening. A pair of tailored chinos can take you from sightseeing to dinner without looking out of place.

Accessories can also elevate a simple outfit. A quality belt, a pair of sunglasses or even pre-owned watches can add personality and polish without requiring extra luggage space. Small details often have a greater impact than an extra change of clothes.

Carry a compact bag

A smaller bag encourages you to focus on what you'll actually use rather than throwing in extra items just in case. It also makes travelling easier when you're moving between airports, stations and hotels. You can keep important items within easy reach and avoid wasting time digging through an overpacked case.

Many travellers use packing cubes to separate clothing, electronics and accessories. This keeps everything organised and helps you spot quickly if you've packed more than you need.

Stick to one pair of shoes

Shoes take up more room than almost anything else in your luggage. In many cases, one well-chosen pair can cover the majority of your trip.

A clean leather trainer or smart casual shoe works particularly well because it suits a wide range of situations. You can wear it while exploring a city during the day and still feel appropriately dressed for an evening meal. Carrying multiple pairs often adds weight without providing much practical benefit.

Wear your chosen shoes for a few days before travelling to make sure they remain comfortable after several hours on your feet.

Use travel-sized grooming essentials

Looking sharp often comes down to presentation rather than the number of outfits you pack. A small wash bag filled with travel-sized grooming products can help you stay fresh without taking up valuable space.

Mini deodorants, shaving products, face wash and toothpaste fit neatly into a carry-on bag and keep your routine consistent when you're away.

Finally, remember to review the latest Foreign Office travel advice before you leave, particularly if you're visiting a new destination.
