There is something special about a bag that already has a story to tell. A faded sports bag, a retro travel holdall or a piece of luggage that has seen a few too many adventures — each comes with its own history, character and personality. And at Goodordering, we think that is exactly what makes them interesting.
Our upcycled bag collection started with a simple idea: what if we could take old, unwanted sports bags and vintage travel bags and turn them into something completely new, without losing the things that made them special in the first place?
The result is a collection of one-of-a-kind upcycled bags that combine vintage design, unexpected colour combinations and everyday functionality.
From the sports hall to the streets
We love the design language of vintage sports and travel bags. Think bold stripes, contrasting panels, oversized zips, chunky handles, retro logos and those wonderfully nostalgic colour combinations that seem to belong to another era.
These bags were originally designed to be practical. They were made to carry sports kits, accompany people on holidays, travel across cities and survive years of everyday use. Many were constructed from robust materials with plenty of life left in them.
But when a bag is no longer needed, it can easily end up forgotten in a cupboard, donated, or discarded.
Rather than starting from scratch with new materials, we look at these existing bags as the starting point for a new design.
Every salvaged bag has different proportions, colours, textures and details. Some have beautiful vintage graphics, others have interesting hardware or unusual fabric combinations. We see these original features as the foundations of the next design.
No two bags are ever quite the same
One of the most exciting parts of working with salvaged materials is that you never know exactly what you are going to find.
Unlike designing a collection using rolls of identical fabric, upcycling means working with what already exists. A particular stripe, a faded colour or an old-school logo might become the starting point for the entire design.
We love the contrast between the original sportswear aesthetic and the clean, functional shapes of a contemporary everyday bag. A vintage gym bag might become a new everyday shoulder bag, or an old travel bag might find a second life as a practical cycling accessory.
The original details are part of the charm. We embrace the colours, the stitching, the texture and the little imperfections that make each piece unique.
Rather than trying to make every bag look identical, we celebrate the differences.
That means each finished bag has its own identity. You are not simply buying another mass-produced accessory; you are choosing a piece with a history, reworked into something that can become part of your own.
Why giving old bags a new life matters
We believe good design is not always about creating something new. Sometimes it is about looking at something that already exists and seeing its potential.
The fashion and accessories industries use huge amounts of materials and resources to produce new products. Making use of existing bags and fabrics is one small, practical way to rethink that process.
By salvaging vintage sports bags and travel bags, we can make use of materials that have already been produced, reduce the need for new fabric for each upcycled piece and help keep usable items in circulation for longer.
Upcycling is different from simply recycling a material. Instead of breaking something down into raw material, we work with the existing object and transform it into something useful again.
Of course, upcycling isn't a magic solution to the wider problem of textile waste. But we think it is an important part of a more thoughtful approach to design — one that values what we already have, rather than constantly demanding more.
And there is a creative benefit, too. Working with salvaged materials encourages us to be resourceful, experimental and open to unexpected ideas. It challenges the idea that good design has to begin with a blank sheet of paper.
Designed for a new adventure
At Goodordering, we have always been interested in the relationship between design and everyday life. Our bags are made to be used, whether that means cycling across London, heading to work, carrying your essentials or setting off on a weekend adventure.
The upcycled collection takes that same practical approach and combines it with the character of vintage sportswear.
We love the idea that a bag which might once have carried someone's football boots or accompanied them on a family holiday can now be part of someone else's daily routine.
There is a lovely continuity to that. The bag gets to keep doing what it was designed to do — carry things, travel and be useful — just in a different form.
And because each piece is made from salvaged materials, the designs are naturally limited. When an original vintage bag is gone, that particular combination of colours, fabrics and details cannot simply be reproduced.
That is part of what makes the collection special.
