How to care for the faux leather on Goodordering Classic

How to care for the faux leather on Goodordering Classic

As a designer i am always trying to improve Goodordering products, ensuring they live a nice long life and provide the most functional accessories for my customers. I often get customer feedback and below is an example of an email i recently received from a customer. The orange handlebar bags are now sold out so many customers want to find ways to preserve the bags. The longevity of the bags really depends on how often they are used and how they are used, so please accept my apologies for any issues you may find, but please always feel free to contact me at jacqui@goodordering.com :)
This is my customer's question:

"Hope this email finds you well!
My name is Nami and I recently purchased some lovely bags from Goodordering.

I’m using the handlebar classic satchel orange bag for the first time now on my weekend out and just noticed that the white fabric holding its handle on the bag side seems to be falling apart. Please find the photos attached.
The bag’s function isn’t affected and I’m loving it but I would prefer to keep the damage to a minimum. So, I was wondering if there’s anything I could apply to help prevent the fabric from deteriorating further. Any tips or recommendations you could provide would be greatly appreciated."

This applies to the classic range of Goodordering bags with the white faux leather binding and the colourful textured body fabric.

Here is a picture of the issue that the below will help with.

For flexible glue coatings on leather or PU (polyurethane) materials, polyurethane (PU) based adhesives and sealants are highly recommended because they remain extremely flexible and durable after drying. These products are specifically designed to flex and bend with the material without cracking or becoming brittle, even in high-use areas like shoes, furniture, and car interiors.

Recommended Products/Types

Polyurethane (PU) Glues: These are ideal for both bonding and coating applications.
  • Water-based PU glues (e.g., Furniture Clinic Leather Glue PU, LeTech Leather Glue WB) are a popular choice for general use and DIY projects. They are non-hazardous, easy to use, and often heat-activated (using a hairdryer) to speed up the curing process, providing ample working time before setting.
  • Solvent-based PU glues (e.g., Furniture Clinic Leather Glue SB) are also available, often for professional use, and can be contact adhesives for instant bonding where no manipulation is needed.
  • Specialized Leather Repair Glues: Brands like Bostik Leather Repair Glue offer clear-drying, water-resistant formulas that create a strong, flexible bond for repairs on both genuine and imitation leather.
  • Flexible Polyurethane Sealants/Topcoats: For a protective coating over an existing surface or after a repair, clear polyurethane sealants provide a durable, scuff-resistant finish with excellent flexibility. These are available in various finishes (matt, satin, gloss).

Key Features to Look For

Flexibility: Ensure the product explicitly states it remains flexible after curing to prevent cracking on dynamic surfaces.
  • Durability: The coating should offer high abrasion and scratch resistance, especially for high-wear items.
  • Water Resistance: Most good options are water-resistant or waterproof once fully cured.
  • Compatibility: Verify the product is suitable for both genuine leather and synthetic/faux leather (vinyl, PU) as some solvent-based glues can damage certain faux materials.
  • Finish: Decide if you need a clear coat or a colored paint, and what level of shine (matt, satin, gloss) is desired.

Application Tips

Preparation: Always clean and dry the surface thoroughly before application to ensure a strong bond.
  • Thin Coats: Apply the product in thin, even layers; thin coats dry and cure better than thick ones.
  • Curing Time: Allow sufficient time for the glue or coating to fully cure (often 24 hours for maximum strength).
  • Testing: Always test the product on an inconspicuous area first to ensure compatibility and the desired result.
