The Numbers Beside the Game Are Getting More Interesting

A match can still surprise you, but now there is a running commentary happening beside it: percentages rise, prices move, and suddenly the numbers are almost as watchable as the action.

Watching sport now usually involves more than keeping an eye on the score. A lot of fans have a phone beside them, checking live stats or seeing how a team’s chances are changing as the game moves along. Those percentages have become part of the experience, and prediction markets take the same idea a step further by putting a price on what might happen next.

The Second Screen Is Part of the Match

The phone beside the television has become part of normal sports viewing, especially when fans want information that the broadcast cannot keep on screen all the time. ESPN Digital & Social reached 229.4 million unique US users in June 2026, up 18% from a year earlier, while its app reached 29.5 million unique users during the same month.

That wider digital reach covered 84% of US adults, which gives you some idea of the scale involved. The app also brings game statistics and betting odds into the viewing experience, so checking another screen during a match can mean following far more than the score. You can watch the action on television and use your phone to dig into what is happening as the game develops.

The Game Is Producing Data Every Second

A modern NFL game generates an extraordinary amount of information before anyone turns it into a percentage on a screen. Around 250 tracking devices can be active at a venue, with player location, speed and acceleration captured 10 times every second. That system produces more than 200 new data points on each play.

The result is a much deeper view of what is happening than the scoreboard can give you. NFL Next Gen Stats can turn that tracking information into measures including Completion Probability and Win Probability, so a viewer can follow the chances behind a play rather than simply seeing the result after it happens.

For anyone watching with a phone nearby, the game therefore has another layer running alongside it. The score still tells you who is ahead, but the data can tell you much more about what may happen next.

A Percentage Gives the Game Another Story

Win probability is easy to understand once you see it in action. A team may be leading, yet its chances of winning can drop sharply after a turnover or injury. The percentage gives you another way to read the game, because it reacts to what is happening rather than waiting for the final score.

That also makes probability a natural part of sports conversation rather than something reserved for statisticians.

Everyday Technology Stops Feeling New Very Quickly

Technology becomes ordinary once people start using it without thinking much about it. Vending machines followed that route from simple mechanical dispensers to cashless machines with digital interfaces and smarter controls.

Sports information has taken a similar route. Live probabilities now sit comfortably beside scores on the same screen you already use during a game.

Prediction Markets Put Money Behind the Percentage

Prediction markets take that interest in probability and give it a price. Instead of simply seeing that a team has a certain chance of winning, you can trade a contract tied to whether a particular event happens.

That makes the numbers more personal, because the price you see reflects what traders currently think the outcome is worth. A contract priced at 60 cents is telling you something very different from one trading at 20 cents, and the basic idea is easy enough to follow once you are already used to percentages appearing beside live sport.

A Bonus Comes With Its Own Set of Odds

Kalshi’s current new-customer promotion on Covers.com puts the maximum reward at $500, but the payout is randomized after a minimum $10 deposit and at least $25 in Predictions transactions. The reward distribution tracked by Covers shows that 70% of qualifying customers receive $15, while just 0.35% land the $500 maximum.

Those figures make the promotion easy to judge in the same language of probability used elsewhere on the platform. The headline reward gets your attention, but the percentages tell you how likely each outcome is.

Digital Tools Become Ordinary Through Use

New technology usually becomes useful when it stops being something people admire from a distance and starts helping with normal tasks. AI tools in small business are already being used that way, supporting everyday work rather than sitting off to one side as a novelty.

Sports apps have followed the same path. Live data and probability tools are now part of what many fans reach for during the game without giving the technology itself much thought.

Watching Sport Now Means Reading More Than the Score

A score tells you what has happened. Modern sports screens can also tell you what might happen next, and that changes what you can follow during the game. Once live probabilities and event markets enter the picture, watching sport becomes a little more interactive without making the basic experience any harder to understand.
