From Vintage Bag to Bike Pannier: Giving Old Bags a New Life

There’s something special about a bag that has already lived a life. Maybe it travelled across the world, was taken to tennis matches, carried sports kit or spent years tucked away in a cupboard. Rather than letting these great old bags end up forgotten — or worse, in landfill — I’ve started giving them a new purpose by turning them into upcycled bike panniers.

The result is a collection of vintage bike bags that are practical, functional and completely unique.

Why upcycle old bags?

I’ve always loved the idea of taking something that already exists and making it useful again. There are so many brilliant vintage and second-hand bags out there, often made from durable materials and with loads of character. They don't necessarily need replacing — they just need a new reason to be used.

Upcycling is different from simply recycling because the original item is kept largely intact and transformed into something new and useful. Instead of breaking a material down and starting again, we're extending the life of something that already exists.

That matters because making new products requires raw materials, energy, water, packaging and transportation. The longer we can keep existing products in use, the less pressure there is to constantly produce new ones.

For me, it also makes sense from a design point of view. Why make another bag from scratch when there are already thousands of interesting bags sitting around waiting for a second chance?

How does a vintage bag become a bike pannier?

The transformation starts with finding the right bag. I look for vintage travel bags, sports bags, tennis bags, messenger bags and other interesting second-hand bags that have the right shape and structure to work as a pannier.

This is probably my favourite part of the process — finding the bags in the first place. You never quite know what you're going to come across. A faded 80s sports bag, a bright vintage travel bag or an old tennis bag can suddenly look completely different when you imagine it attached to a bicycle.

Once I've found a suitable bag, I work out where the pannier attachment needs to go. The position is important because the bag needs to sit securely on the bike rack without getting in the way of your feet or the wheel.

I then add the pannier hardware, creating a secure attachment that allows the bag to be easily clipped onto and removed from a bicycle rack.

The beauty of using existing bags is that I don't want to completely change them. I want to keep the things that make each one interesting — the original colours, logos, pockets, handles, zips, labels and little signs of its previous life.

The transformation

Once the pannier hardware is added, something quite magical happens. A bag that was originally designed for travelling, sport or everyday carrying suddenly becomes a functional cycling bag.

A vintage tennis bag can become a pannier for your commute. An old travel bag can carry your shopping. A retro sports bag can become your everyday bike bag.

There might be a little wear, a faded patch of fabric or a mark from its previous life. I actually think these details make the bags better. They show that the bag has already been somewhere and done something before starting its next adventure.

Why I do it

Goodordering has always been about making cycling a little more fun, colourful and practical. But over time, I've become increasingly interested in small-scale, thoughtful production rather than simply making more and more new products.

Upcycling feels like a natural extension of that idea.

I love the challenge of looking at something that might otherwise be discarded and thinking, What could this become?

It also makes each bag feel more personal. You're not buying hundreds of identical bags made from newly produced materials. You're getting a one-of-a-kind vintage bike pannier with its own history.

There's something really satisfying about giving an old bag a second chance — and then seeing it back out on the streets, carrying shopping, heading to work or simply enjoying another ride around town.

A second life on two wheels

For me, upcycling isn't about making something perfect or pretending its history doesn't exist. It's about celebrating what is already there and finding a new use for it.

These upcycled bike panniers combine vintage style, sustainability and everyday functionality — while keeping perfectly good bags in use for longer.

So the next time you see an old sports bag or vintage travel bag gathering dust, don't throw it away just yet. It might just have another adventure left in it.
